The Gift of the Everlasting Gospel

Everlasting Gospel
The Gospel with Jodie Bishop

When we get the gospel wrong, it is almost impossible to get anything else right. The gospel defines and ratifies our relationship with God. The true gospel will unite us with God, but a false gospel leads men after other gods that cannot save.

Those who trust these lying gospels will cry out to their false lord, never knowing he cannot hear, move, speak, or save. Even as they cry out, the God they never knew and the one who never knew them will respond.

21Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Matthew 7:21, emphasis added

While a wrong gospel inevitably leads to a false god, the true gospel points to the true and living God, a confident assurance of salvation and peace with God. False gospels guarantee destruction, while the true gospel of Christ is life.1

Gospel, Defined in Scripture

While working in a Christian booth at the Utah State Fair, I met a man, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I asked him to show me where the gospel is defined in scripture. He could not.

I have asked this same question of many in the Mormon church, and they typically answer, “The gospel is enshrined in all scripture” or “The gospel is found in all the teachings of the Mormon church.” Sadly, most Mormons have never considered the importance of this question and have no idea where to find the true definition of the everlasting gospel.

After years of asking hundreds of people, no Momon could produce the correct biblical answer. This man was no exception. So, I opened my bible and began to read.

1Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand; 2By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

1 Corinthians 15:1-4}{KJV}, emphasis added

Allow me to unpack the portions presented in bold. By this, we will clarify our understanding.

I declare unto you the gospel“: This is not Paul engaged in idol chitchat. What we have here is an official and binding apostolic declaration. When an apostle of the Lord Jesus Christ says, “I declare,” prudent men pay attention.

wherein ye stand“: Since Paul delivered this gospel definition as an official declaration, it is upon the gospel that true believers make their stand. It becomes the hill they willingly die on and where they plant their flag. This gospel definition is effectively a line drawn in the sand from which a Christian will not be moved.

By which also ye are saved“: Because this is the basis of our salvation, all true Christians stand on and defend its truth against all comers.

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures“: Jesus paid the debt that none of us could pay. He did for us what we cannot do for ourselves. He alone, without our help, canceled the record of debt that stood against us, carried it to the cross, and nailed it there.2 All this He did according to messianic prophesy found throughout the Old Testament.

he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:” This true God had the power to raise Himself from the dead. He had the ability to erase the stain and corruption of death and renew life in perfection. He still possesses that power and can erase the death, sin, and separation that infects us all. By Him alone and through Him alone, we will live with the God of light for eternity.3 Once again, all was accomplished to fulfill messianic prophecies.

The Greek for “gospel” is εὐαγγέλιον. Let us together translate this amazing word into our native language. Strong’s Concordance translates the word gospel as “good message.” Thayer’s Greek Lexicon provides “good tidings” as the proper translation. The commonly held understanding by most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that gospel means “good news,” which fits perfectly with both Strong’s and Thayer’s.

The biblical definition of “gospel” specifically showcases the gospel as good news, tidings, and a good message. It is all about what Jesus did for us. I often reflect on what He did for me, and I am amazed. Jesus is holy and upright, and, above all things, He chose to suffer for a wretch like me.4

Being dead in my sins,5 and an enemy to God,6 he still chose to rescue me. Let’s face it: the shed blood of Jesus to save a sinner like me is the best news of all. He died for your sins and mine and the sins of the whole world.7 For us all, Jesus did what we will never be able to do for ourselves. I will never understand why He did such a thing for His enemies.8 In absolute awe and wonder, I will praise His name forever for this free gift of love and life.

Now, back to my story. Together, this LDS man and I spoke of the true points of the gospel and came into unity as to why it is good news. He agreed that this biblical gospel is the best news of all.

The Mormon Gospel Defined

Mormon leaders have introduced a new definition of the gospel. This new gospel is unlike, in every way, the biblical gospel.

In its fulness, the gospel includes all the doctrines, principles, laws, ordinances, and covenants necessary for us to be exalted in the celestial kingdom.

True to the Faith, Salt Lake City: 2004, p. 76} & Gospel Topics Essay, Gospel, www.churchofjesuschrist.org

I asked my new Mormon friend, “If I give you paper and pen, can you list all the doctrines, principles, laws, ordinances, and covenants that make up the Mormon gospel?” His face was troubled as he admitted, “No, I can’t.”

I waited quietly while this Mormon gentleman mentally confronted his lacking abilities. Then, looking him in the eye, I asked, “If the gospel is a list of doctrines, principles, laws, ordinances, and covenants so long that it cannot be listed, how can you know you are living each requirement?” I waited, but he offered no answer.

Again, I waited quietly as this man struggled with his new and troubling reality. I asked a third question, “If the gospel is a list of doctrines, principles, laws, ordinances, and covenants so long that you can’t write them down and cannot know you are living them, how is that good news?” I waited, and again, there was no answer.

We spoke of how the Mormon gospel is complex and undefinable. we contrasted it with the biblical gospel, which is so understandable that even a small child can comprehend it.

I pointed out that the biblical gospel is all about what Jesus did for him, while the Mormon gospel is about what he must do for the Mormon Jesus. Once again, I asked, “How is that good news?” The poor man was dumbfounded. That he had a problem was evident and undeniable. For the first time, he seemed to be perceiving the depths of his dilemma.

Other Gospels

Other gospels have been a problem since the establishment of the first-century church. Gospel confusion is a favorite tactic of the devil. He is not very original in his attacks against God. Instead, he is reliably consistent. I think Satan continues in the same attacks against God because humans tend to have itching ears that only hear what they desire.9

My conversation with the Mormon man at the Utah State Fair continued as we discussed gospel changes throughout history. I pointed out that false gospels are not limited to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Corinth

The church at Corinth was struggling. False teachers came on the scene and taught something other than what the Christians had previously received and accepted as the gospel.10 Consequently, an epistle was dispatched to correct error and expose false doctrine.

3But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve in his craftiness, your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity and the purity that is toward Christ. 4For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we did not preach, or if ye receive a different spirit, which ye did not receive, or a different gospel, which ye did not accept, ye do well to bear with him.}

2 Corinthians 11:3-4, ASV, emphasis added

Galatia

As it was in Corinth, so it was in Galatia. False teachers, known as Judaizers, infiltrated the church and led the people astray. They taught that the people could be saved through faith in Jesus, coupled with obedience to the laws and ordinances of the old covenant, which included the law of Moses. In particular, they focused on circumcision.

Another epistle was written and sent to restore the people of Galatia to the path leading to eternal life.

6I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Galatians 1:6-9, KJV

We discussed how the Mormon gospel is clearly different when contrasted with the biblical definition. I showed him that the Mormon variant of the gospel mirrors the false teachings the Galatians once adopted.

As it now is in Mormonism, it once was in Corinth and Galatia. Carefully compare and contrast the false gospels of the early church with the current thinking of the Mormons.

But there rose up certain of the sect of the Pharisees which believed, saying, That it was needful to circumcise them, and to command them to keep the law of Moses.

Acts 15:5, KJV, emphasis added

We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel

Mormon 3rd Article of Faith, emphasis added

This Mormon gentleman was trying to earn salvation by keeping the laws and ordinances of his Mormon Gospel. The Galatians did the same by keeping the laws and ordinances of the Law of Moses.

Questions for Mormon Bishops

  • If the Galatians were accursed for trying to earn salvation by blending the grace of Jesus with the demands of the law, how are the Mormon people not also accursed?

Impossible Gospels

The Galatians and Corinthians would have been powerless to list every point of the law. Their false gospels required them to live the Law of Moses, augmented with the clutter imposed by Pharisees, Scribes, and Judaizers.

The Mormons, however, have a more daunting task. They must list the entire Law of Moses, every New Testament demand, and the ever-changing doctrines of their prophets and apostles. These points of law are nothing less than burdens placed on the backs of the people.11

For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.

Matthew 23:2, KJV

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.

2 Corinthians 11:3, KJV

The Mormon me did easily bear with those who taught a very different gospel. I blindly accepted the Mormon gospel without thought, reservation, or investigation.

… And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

Matthew 15:14b, KJV

A small light of understanding began to burn. He shook my hand and thanked me for our time together. He turned to leave, then turning back, he opened his arms and asked for a hug. The seed is in the soil. Please, God, make it grow.12

The Changing Mormon Gospel

The Mormon church has produced multiple and varied definitions of the everlasting gospel. Together, we will examine a few.

The Gospel According to the Book of Mormon Introduction

And so we begin. The first paragraph on the Introduction Page of my old and well-used Book of Mormon reads;

The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with the ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains, as does the Bible, the fulness of the everlasting gospel.

Book of Mormon Introduction. 1981 edition, emphasis added

This introduction should cause Mormon eyebrows in every nation to knit together in consternation and confusion. The first premise of Mormonism is that the Bible and the gospel were corrupted and ultimately lost sometime after the death of Jesus and His apostles. It would seem impossible to them that the everlasting gospel is found in the Bible. Nevertheless, the Book of Mormon Introduction confirms that the fullness of the gospel is intact and biblically preserved.

Questions for Mormon Bishops

  • If the Bible contains the “fulness of the gospel,” Why would a restoration of the gospel be necessary?

One example is the Great Apostasy, which occurred after the Savior established His Church. After the deaths of the Savior and His Apostles, men corrupted the principles of the gospel and made unauthorized changes in Church organization and priesthood ordinances. Because of this widespread wickedness, the Lord withdrew the authority of the priesthood from the earth.

True to the Faith, 2004, p13

The Mormon church claims many plain and precious things are missing from the Bible.13 It claims Mormonism to be the only true and living church upon the face of the whole earth.14 It claims the church and everlasting gospel were restored through the Mormon prophet Joseph Smith. However, an early version of the Book of Mormon introduction page clearly indicates that the gospel was and is fully preserved in the Bible. In 2004, something changed.

The Book of Mormon is a volume of holy scripture comparable to the Bible. It is a record of God’s dealings with ancient inhabitants of the Americas and contains the fulness of the everlasting gospel.

Book of Mormon Introduction. 2004 & 2006 editions, emphasis added

Removed are the words “as does the Bible.” With the removal of four simple words, the introduction to the Book of Mormon renounces the Bible and secures the Mormon narrative. With this significant contradiction scrubbed from the collective memory of the Mormon people, they are free to embrace forgetfulness and move on. By sleight of hand, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints rewrote its history and buoyed up a new gospel narrative.

The early Book of Mormon introduction claimed that the Bible contained the fullness of the everlasting gospel. In 2004, Mormon leaders asserted that the gospel is now missing from the Bible. So, either the gospel was removed from the Bible in 2004, or the introduction page was changed to back away from a previously held Mormon belief. What would it take to change the Bible or, alternatively, the Book of Mormon?

Questions for Mormon Bishops

  • If the pre-2004 Bible contained the “fulness of the everlasting gospel,” How do you account for the absence of the gospel in the post-2004 Bible?

There are various translations of the Bible. Some are faithful to the original manuscripts, while others, like the Joseph Smith Translation, are not. However, these translations are not the Bible. According to God’s promise, the Bible is preserved in ancient Hebrew and Greek manuscripts.15

We have nearly 6,000 New Testament manuscripts in Greek, complete or fragmentary. When we account for manuscripts in Latin, Coptic, Syriac, and other languages, the number rises to over 40,000. These make the New Testament the most broadly attested work of antiquity. The manuscripts exist in near-perfect unity. This proves, beyond all doubt, that God fulfilled His promise and preserved His holy word.

Did the gospel suddenly vanish from our Bibles in the early 21st century, as suggested by the Mormon church? What would be required to remove the gospel from the biblical record? For starters, 40,000 New Testament manuscripts in various languages and locations worldwide would have to be changed simultaneously.

In addition, all Old Testament records, including the Dead Sea Scrolls, Masoretic Text, and Septuagint, would require instantaneous deletions. Not only would they have to change unitedly and instantly, but all changes would have to be made so that no one would notice. Each changed document would require perfectly matching ancient ink in color, composition, and writing style.

Millions of printed Bibles in thousands of languages would require changes to match the manuscript modifications. Every commentary, letter, talk, sermon, recorded audio, and video would require a thorough scrubbing to remove every hint of the gospel. Lastly, the memory of every biblical scholar and devoted Christian would demand massive deletions.

The magnitude of all these necessary steps to eliminate the everlasting gospel from our Bibles is simply impossible.

The Book of Mormon, however, has been changed with regularity. A Salt Lake newspaper reported,

Starting in the 1980s, longtime anti-Mormon researchers, Sandra and Gerald (now deceased) Tanner have charted nearly 4,000 changes from the 1830 version and the book as it reads today. To them, such a magnitude of difference suggested Mormon leaders were playing fast and loose with the sacred text and contributed to the Tanners’ view of the book as fake.

Peggy Fletcher Stack, Conclusions differ on reasons for changes in Book of Mormon, The Salt Lake Tribune November 17, 2007

In the Mormon church, a small committee of aged men has made major and minor changes to the Book of Mormon. Changes have been made with historical ease. This pattern of changes suggests that Mormon leaders have again modified the Book of Mormon to destroy the credibility of the biblical text.

The Fully Restored Gospel

Thanks to Joseph Smith, the Mormon church has held fast to the claim that the gospel is fully restored. Mormon publications overflow with claims of global apostasy and total restoration.

The fulness of the gospel has been restored, and the true Church of Jesus Christ is on the earth again. No other organization can compare to it. It is not the resulThe Church of t of a reformation, with well meaning men and women doing all in their power to bring about change. It is a restoration of the Church established by Jesus Christ. It is the work of Heavenly Father and His Beloved Son.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, True to the Faith(Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, 2004) 136

Because we believe the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored in our time by the Prophet Joseph Smith, we wish to give all people an opportunity to know and accept this message.

James E. Faust, Talk, General Conference, Salt Lake City, April 2006

The fulness of the gospel has been restored, and the true Church of Jesus Christ is on the earth again.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, True to the Faith(Salt Lake City: The Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-day Saints, 2004) 136

However, the claim of a total restoration changed when Russell M. Nelson took the reins of the Mormon church.

If you think the Church has been fully restored, you’re just seeing the beginning … Wait till next year, and then the next year, Eat your vitamin pills. Get some rest. It’s going to be exciting.

Russell M. Nelson, “President Nelson About the Church in the Coming Years: Eat Your Vitamin Pills. Get Some Rest. It’s Going to Be Exciting.”, LDS Living, October 31, 2018, ldsliving.com, emphasis added

This changed doctrine shines a troubling light on the stability of Mormon doctrine. Mormonism claims the gospel restoration was necessary to restore plain and precious things to the Bible.16 At the same time, it claims that the restoration is not complete.

Shifting doctrines leave the Mormon people to worry that the things they believe today will be rejected tomorrow by the ongoing restoration of the Mormon gospel. This prophetic assertion from Russell M. Nelson opened the door to massive theological changes and placed the Mormon church precariously on shifting sands.17

Questions for Mormon Bishops

  • If the restoration is only beginning, what assurance do you have that you are not still missing many plain and precious truths?
  • In what ways is the Mormon church yet incomplete in its theology, its understanding of the nature of God, of grace, repentance, works righteousness, the atonement, God’s covenant with Abraham, the proper use of temples, the priesthood, heaven, and hell, and what it means to be a follower of Jesus?
  • Russell M. Nelson says the restoration is incomplete. For nearly 200 years, the church claimed Joseph Smith restored the gospel. Both cannot be true. Which statement is the lie?
  • If plain and precious truths are still lost to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, how can it be the true church?

The Book of Mormon Gospel

If the gospel has been restored in its fullness and enshrined in the Book of Mormon, what might that gospel look like? The book of 3 Nephi provides a clear answer.

13Behold I have given unto you my gospel, and this is the gospel which I have given unto you—that I came into the world to do the will of my Father, because my Father sent me. 14And my Father sent me that I might be lifted up upon the cross; and after that I had been lifted up upon the cross, that I might draw all men unto me, that as I have been lifted up by men even so should men be lifted up by the Father, to stand before me, to be judged of their works, whether they be good or whether they be evil— 15And for this cause have I been lifted up; therefore, according to the power of the Father I will draw all men unto me, \textbf{that they may be judged according to their works.

Book of Mormon, 3 Nephi 27:13-15, emphasis added

This Book of Mormon gospel definition started strong and soon devolved into a works-righteous theology. The bible disagrees,

8For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV)

13You were dead through your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh. He made you alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14wiping out the handwriting in ordinances which was against us; and he has taken it out of the way, nailing it to the cross;

The Other Another Mormon Gospel

Not long ago, in the General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Dallin H. Oaks revealed a new definition of the everlasting gospel.

President Russell M. Nelson has taught us, “This Church was restored so that families could be formed, sealed, and exalted eternally.”

Dallin H. Oaks. “Two Great Commandments” General Conference, 2019

Early Mormon teachings clarify that Joseph Smith restored the gospel so it would be on earth again. Russell M. Nelson and Dallin H. Oaks were the most senior Mormon leaders at the time of this quote. Unitedly, they teach that the restored gospel is about forming, sealing, and exalting families for eternity.

Think back to the Book of Mormon Introduction and the claims it made. It declares the fullness of the everlasting gospel is enshrined in its pages. Yet, not one Book of Mormon passage addresses, in any measure, or makes mention of forming, sealing, and exalting families. Neither is this doctrine found in the Bible. Without scriptural support from either side, this doctrine rests on the ever-shifting sand of a church that can change anything at any time and call it restoration.18

Questions for Mormon Bishops

  • If the gospel, as defined by Dallin H. Oaks and Russell M. Nelson, is not found in the Book of Mormon or the Bible, how is that good news?
  • If the Book of Mormon contains the “fulness of the everlasting gospel,” why do its pages contain no mention of families being formed, sealed, and exalted?

The Cost of False Gospels

False gospels guarantee destruction, while the true gospel of Christ leads to life.19 If God is genuinely unchanging,20 it follows that the gospel will remain as immovable and unchangeable as God Himself. However, if the gospel is a fluid, malleable, moving target, it can hardly point to an unchanging God.

The examples of the Mormon gospel examined herein suffer from two irreconcilable conflicts. First, each is in obvious conflict with the others. By this conflict, we know that these are not of God because He is not the author of confusion.21 Second, a changing gospel cannot lead us to our unchanging God.22

How can we know which is the true gospel or if these varied and infinitely different gospels are all wrong together? The epistles to the churches of Galatia and Corinth provide the answer. We can recognize false gospels by comparing everything to the gospel previously received.23

Any departure from what God has already revealed is a lie. Before the Book of Mormon, the gospel was established by God and accepted by the early church. In the Bible, we find the standard by which all things are weighed and measured. If we fail to test all things and come to believe a false gospel, there will be a terrible cost. Paul highlights the infinite scope of this cost.

Behold, I, Paul, tell you that if you receive circumcision, Christ will profit you nothing.

Galatians 5:2 (WEB)

If you set out to be saved, in whole or part, by works of the law, you will not benefit from the promises of the unchanging and everlasting gospel. The death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus will profit you nothing!

Yes, I testify again to every man who receives circumcision, that he is a debtor to do the whole law.

Galatians 5:3 (WEB)

Paul teaches that anyone who sets out to be saved by perfect obedience to any part of the law can only be saved by perfectly keeping the whole of it. James teaches the same.24 Absolute and unfailing perfection is the Mormon price of salvation, and who can pay it?

You are alienated from Christ, you who desire to be justified by the law. You have fallen away from grace.

Galatians 5:4 (WEB)

“Fallen away from grace.” What an awful thing!

Now, we come full circle. Return with me to the first Book of Mormon introduction. It claimed the fullness of the gospel exists in the Book of Mormon and the Bible. The introduction got it half right. The Bible does include the gospel, boldly declared. This everlasting gospel has remained as reliably consistent and unchangeable as God Himself.

Almost two thousand years before the Book of Mormon, Paul penned 1 Corinthians 15:1-4. This passage contains the everlasting gospel, first accepted by the early followers of Christ. This is the gospel declared by the apostle Paul. Christians stand on this gospel, and by it, they are saved.

When we compare this received gospel to all comers, we do, with boldness and authority, identify and expose every false teaching. Now and forever, believers defend the only everlasting gospel. This gospel is the hill upon which we willingly die and the Rock upon which we stand. This gospel points to Jesus, the power by which we are saved!

Reaching back to antiquity, nothing I can find translates “gospel” into an unknowable list of demanding doctrines, principles, laws, ordinances, and covenants to make one fit for exaltation. Neither can I find ancient support for other versions of the Mormon gospel. More than 5,000 Greek manuscripts authoritatively attest to the real gospel. It is preserved in power, authority, and simplicity. By it, I know I have eternal life in this instant, in this hour, and forever.25
