Other Gods
Virtually all false religions and counterfeit theologies share one thing in common, other gods!
1If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the Lord your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul.
Deuteronomy 13:1-3, KJV
So, let us be Bereans and test a few examples:
The Mormons
Ye are my witnesses, saith the Lord, and my servant whom I have chosen: that ye may know and believe me, and understand that I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
Isaiah 43:10
But the Mormons teach:
As man now is, God once was: As God now is, man may be.
Lorenzo Snow, Mormon Apostle

The Calvinists
And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.
1 John 2:2, KJV
But the Calvinists teach:
The Reformed theologians would say that though Jesus’ sacrifice was sufficient for all, it was not intended for all.

The Charismatics
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:
2 Timothy 3:16, KJV
But the Charismatics teach:
It’s difficult to get the same fruit as the early Church when we value a book they didn’t have more than the Holy Spirit they did have.

The Progressives
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality,
1 Corinthians 6:9, ESV
But the Progressives teach:
Is it possible for a person to love God, love the Bible, and accept the ordination of gay men and women all at the same time? Yes. I do.

Summation
When I was a boy, my grandfather told me a story about a stage line that was hiring a new driver. Duties included driving a horse-drawn stagecoach over a treacherous mountain pass. On one side, the mountain rose in a vertical cliff. On the other, it fell away into a deep valley below. Each perspective driver was asked, “How close to the edge can you safely drive?” One after another boasted of being skilled enough to run the iron wheels to the edge of the precipice while maintaining total control. But one potential driver admitted, “I don’t know, I will stay as far from the edge as possible!” Which one do you suppose got the job?
In each of the above-mentioned faith traditions, there is a line. Once crossed, a person has passed from worshiping the true God to the practice of idolatry. I don’t always know exactly where that line is drawn. I only know that I will stay as far from it as possible. Each example above is, for me, a picture of people diving on or over that forbidden line.
